Frequently asked questions

Answers to the most common questions about investment taxation in Slovakia

Do I have to pay tax on dividends from foreign stocks?

Yes. Dividends are taxed in a separate tax base under §51e of the Income Tax Act at 7%, regardless of which country they come from – the 35% rate applies only to dividends from non-cooperating states, which do not include the USA. Tax withheld abroad (e.g. 15% on US dividends with a W8BEN on file) is credited under §45 separately for each country. Dividends are exempt from health-insurance contributions.

How are stock and ETF sales taxed?

Income from the sale of securities is income under §8 of the Income Tax Act. We match the trades with the FIFO method, and the tax base is the difference between the sale price and the acquisition price converted to EUR. Securities admitted to a regulated market and held for more than one year are exempt under §9 (1) (k); the rest gets the 500 € exemption and the progressive rate of the year — two bands of 19 % and 25 % up to 2025, and four bands of 19 %, 25 %, 30 % and 35 % from 2026. Losses do not net across asset classes (§8 (9)).

Which brokers do you support?

Yes. The automatic import is available from Interactive Brokers (Flex Query XML) and from XTB (the account history of xStation 5 in the XLSX or the CSV format). You can enter and edit the trades of the other platforms by hand. We are preparing the Trading 212 import now, and more platforms (Binance, DEGIRO, Revolut) are planned.

Which exchange rate should I use for foreign currency conversion?

Under §31 of the Income Tax Act you have a choice: either the ECB reference rate (published by NBS) valid on the transaction date, or the annual average rate for the calendar year. The choice must be applied consistently for the whole tax period. In Taxify you switch between the two when running the calculation, and we fetch the rates automatically.

Do you calculate health-insurance contributions too?

Yes. From the §8 tax base (all asset classes, after the €500 exemption) and from the tax base of interest and coupons under §7 we also calculate health-insurance contributions at the rate applicable to the tax period – 14% up to 2024, 15% for 2025 and 16% from 2026. Dividends under §51e are exempt from health-insurance contributions, and so is interest on which a Slovak payer withheld the tax (for example XTB).

How do you tax cryptocurrencies?

We calculate crypto within §8 at the same progressive rate as the other asset classes (19 % / 25 % up to 2025, four bands of 19 – 35 % from 2026) and we include it in the base of the health contributions. Neither the 500 € exemption nor the one-year holding test applies to it. The taxation of crypto has changed repeatedly in Slovakia, so we take the conservative reading and the application warns about that uncertainty on crypto trades.

Does Taxify file the tax return for me?

No. Taxify calculates the tax and prepares a PDF with the whole breakdown, which you use as the basis for the annex of the Type B return. You file the return yourself — through the portal of the Financial Administration or on paper. We do not generate the XML for eDane yet.

Is my financial data safe?

Yes. Your data is stored encrypted on servers within the EU. We do not sell or share your financial data with third parties. See our Privacy Policy for details.
